The Profile

Florida's Most
Familiar Roofline

Capistrano is a high S-profile tile — semi-cylindrical, and the most traditionally recognised of all tile profiles. If you picture a Florida tile roof, this is the shape you're picturing.

The S-profile forms a continuous rolling line across the roof, each tile flowing into the next. It throws a deep, moving shadow that shifts through the day — sharp at noon, long and warm by late afternoon.

One point from Eagle's own literature worth repeating: people assume Capistrano suits only Spanish or Italian architecture, but it works with almost any style, pairing well with stucco, stone, or brick. It's used on residential, commercial, military and institutional buildings across the country.

The Real Question

Eagle Capistrano or
Westlake Barcelona 900?

Both are high barrel concrete tile suiting the same architecture. We install both. Here's where they genuinely differ.

Both are excellent, and the decision usually comes down to which colour you fall for and what's in stock. Capistrano's lighter weight and wider Florida colour range are real advantages; Barcelona's non-prorated warranty language is arguably stronger. See Barcelona 900 →

Why This Tile

What You're Getting

Hurricane Tested

Approved for the Miami-Dade high velocity hurricane zone. With tested high-wind installation methods, rated for sustained winds up to 180 mph.

Hail & Impact Tested

Florida-manufactured Eagle tiles are impact tested. Some carriers discount premiums on tile roofs for exactly this reason — worth asking your agent.

Made in Florida

Manufactured in Sumterville. USA owned, USA made. A shorter supply chain means better availability and easier matching when you need tiles years later.

32 Colors, Published SRI

The widest Capistrano range in Florida — and Eagle publishes solar reflectance data per colour, so you can weigh performance alongside looks.

880 lbs per Square

Light for a high barrel tile. On a shingle-to-tile conversion that difference can decide whether structural work is needed at all.

Lifetime Warranty

Eagle's lifetime transferable limited product warranty. We register it in your name at completion rather than leaving it to you.

Specialty Installation

Boosted Capistrano

Eagle's own framing: the genuine look of old Spanish tile without the premium cost of a clay roof.

A boosted installation adds accessory pieces in a contrasting colour that raise the leading edge of each tile course. The result is deeper shadow, more dimension, and the layered character of a mortar-set clay roof — on concrete designed to last the life of the structure.

You choose how much boost. More coverage means more character and more weight, which is why it needs planning up front rather than deciding on site.

Boost levelApprox. installed weight
Field tile only880 lbs per square
10% application~990 lbs per square
20% application~1,080 lbs per square
30% application~1,170 lbs per square

Eagle's advice, and ours: contrast is the point. Choose a boosted colour that sits noticeably against your base tile rather than blending into it, and mix the two on the roof for authenticity.

Color Range

All 32 Capistrano Colors

Eagle's full Florida Capistrano range, with their own colour descriptions. Filter by family, or by reflectance — colours rated SRI 17 and above reflect meaningfully more solar heat, which is felt in your attic through a Florida August.

Get Physical Samples — Eagle Says So Too

Eagle prints this on every page of their brochure: obtain a current tile sample before choosing. Concrete tile is made from natural materials, colour varies between production runs, and photography can't reproduce the S-curve shadow that gives Capistrano its depth.

We'll bring samples to your home and hold them against your stucco and trim in Florida light. We can also give you addresses of Capistrano roofs we've installed nearby so you can see one finished. Request samples →

Two Things Homeowners Miss

The Tile Isn't
Your Waterproofing

S-tile is designed to let water pass beneath it and drain out. The membrane underneath does all the actual waterproofing.

This is why Florida barrel roofs so often need work while the tile still looks perfect — the tile outlives the underlayment, sometimes by decades. When that happens a lift and relay is usually right: we remove the tile carefully, install new underlayment and secondary water resistance, and reset your original tile.

The second thing: weight. At 880 lbs per square Capistrano is light for a high barrel, but still far heavier than shingle. Converting from shingle means verifying your structure — and a 30% boosted installation adds nearly another 300 lbs per square on top. Because we hold a general contractor license alongside our roofing license, we handle framing work directly rather than stopping your job.

Questions

Eagle Capistrano FAQs

What is a high barrel S-tile?

A semi-cylindrical tile shaped like a flattened letter S, so each tile flows into the next forming a continuous rolling line across the roof. It's the most traditionally recognised of all tile profiles and the one most people picture when they think of a Florida or Spanish tile roof.

Eagle Capistrano or Westlake Barcelona 900?

Both are high barrel concrete tile and we install both. Capistrano offers 32 Florida colours to Barcelona's 20, weighs less at roughly 880 lbs per square, and is hail and impact tested. Barcelona 900 carries a non-prorated fully transferable warranty, which is strong language. In practice the decision usually comes down to which colour you prefer and what's in stock.

What is Boosted Capistrano?

A specialty installation using accessory pieces in a contrasting colour that raise the leading edge of each tile course, creating the layered look of a mortar-set clay roof. You choose roughly 10%, 20% or 30% coverage — more boost means more character and more weight, from about 990 to 1,170 lbs per square. It's exclusive to the Capistrano profile.

What does the SRI number mean?

Solar Reflectance Index — how much solar heat the tile reflects rather than absorbs. Higher is cooler. In the Capistrano range Boca Cream leads at SRI 34 and qualifies for LEED credit, while darker colours like Sierra Madre and Cocoa Range sit around 9. On a Florida roof that difference is felt in your attic and your cooling bill, so it's worth weighing alongside colour.

Does Capistrano look like real clay tile?

Closely. Eagle designed the colour range specifically to emulate terracotta, and on a finished roof most people can't tell from the street — particularly with a boosted installation. Real clay has colour running through the fired body and never fades, but costs considerably more and chips more easily under foot traffic.

Is my house strong enough for Capistrano?

If your home already has tile, almost certainly. Converting from shingle requires structural verification first. At roughly 880 lbs per square Capistrano is on the lighter side for high barrel, which sometimes makes a conversion viable where a heavier tile wouldn't be. We assess this during the free inspection, and our general contractor license means we handle any required structural work ourselves.

Does a tile roof reduce my insurance premium?

It can. Eagle notes that some carriers discount premiums on tile roofs because of impact resistance, and a new roof meeting current code with secondary water resistance typically earns wind mitigation credits. Actual savings depend entirely on your carrier and policy — we'll give you the documentation so your agent can tell you the real number.

How much does a Capistrano roof cost?

Cost depends on square footage, roof pitch and complexity, whether structural work is needed, the underlayment specification, and whether you choose a boosted installation. We'll inspect your roof and give you line-item pricing in writing. Try our roof cost calculator for a rough starting figure.

Other Tile Profiles

Capistrano is one of several profiles we install. For Westlake's high barrel see Barcelona 900. For a gentler Mediterranean roll see Villa 900 or Estate. For a flat contemporary look see Saxony 900 Slate. For genuine fired terracotta, see clay roof systems.

Start with the concrete tile overview, or read about the underlayment beneath every tile roof — the layer that actually determines how long your roof lasts.
